"Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night may become a wolf when the
wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright." In 1941, The Wolf Man introduced the world to a new Universal
movie monster and the mythology of the werewolf was redefined forever. Featuring a heartbreaking performance
by Lon Chaney Jr. and groundbreaking make-up by Jack Pierce, this story of a cursed man who transforms into a deadly
werewolf when the moon is full has not only become a masterpiece of the horror genre, but of all time. Now,
in this 2-Disc Special Edition, the classic film lives on with a digitally remastered picture and all-new bonus features
Reviews
"Disc Two of the set includes some new material beginning with the featurette The Wolf Man: From Ancient Curse to Modern Myth (10:07)
offering more input from filmmakers and horror buffs like Joe Dante, Kim Newman, Mick Garris and Steve Haberman on the 1941 film
and Universal's contributions to the overall werewolf mythos. The brief documentary Pure in Heart:
The Life and Legacy of Lon Chaney Jr. (36:50) pulls back the curtain on the younger and lesser-known Chaney who
always seemed to live in the shadow of his famous father. This interesting doc offers interviews with writers Kim Newman,
author Gregory William Mank and producer/friend A.C. Lyles talking about how Chaney Jr. reluctantly became an actor like his
father and gradually came up through the ranks working in bit roles. The featurette
titled He Who Made Monsters: The Life and Art of Jack Pierce (25:00) is a great look at the important and often-overlooked contributions of makeup artist Jack Pierce in creating all of the classic Universal Monsters from Frankenstein to the Wolf Man. The segment includes interviews and testimonials from contemporary film makeup artists like Nick Dudman, Kevin Haney, Rick Baker, Tom Savini and Greg Nicotero all praising Pierce's innovative work."
"The special features in this two-disc set include extras that have appeared on previous releases, as well as a
trio of brand new featurettes. Not surprisingly, the three fresh pieces are the best,
particularly Pure in Heart: The Life and Legacy of Lon Chaney Jr., which traces the star's bumpy Hollywood career often
spent in the shadow of his famous actor father, and He Who Made Monsters: The Life and Art of Jack Pierce,
a 25-minute documentary that focuses on the make-up artist responsible for creating Universal's key monsters of cinema."
"There are two recycled special features/documentaries from the other Universal Legacy Series
horror DVDs. He Who Made Monsters: The Life and Art of Jack Pierce and Universal Horror
are must watches for any fan of the genre and Universal Horror. The must see special feature
is Pure in Heart: The Life and Legacy of Lon Chaney Jr. It points out the parallels between Chaney,
his father, the Wolf Man and his father where clearly Chaney drew much of his inspiration from. The
documentary also details Chaney's career and films away from his Wolf Man, Frankenstein and Dracula (Son of Dracula to be precise) days."
