The World Fantasy Award, British
Fantasy Award and International Horror Guild Award-winning anthology series
THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF BEST NEW HORROR is now accepting submissions for
VOLUME 13. Deadline is February 2002.
As usual, BEST NEW HORROR will contain around 200,000 words of REPRINT horror
fiction, originally published between December 2000 and December 2001. Any stories
not published during this period, or which are reprints from earlier sources,
will not be considered.
The book will be published around
Halloween 2002 in the UK by Constable & Robinson and in the USA by Carroll
& Graf.
Because of the extremely high standard of these volumes and a desire to see
only the very best examples of a writer's work, unsolicited submissions are
limited to just ONE STORY PER AUTHOR (unless otherwise agreed). I am interested
in looking at contemporary cutting-edge supernatural and psychological horror
and dark fantasy. No pastiches. There is no word limit (although shorter stories
stand more chance of being accepted than novellas), so send me what you consider
to be your VERY BEST horror story of the year. Web publication is acceptable.
I will only read a standard hardcopy
manuscript, photocopy or tearsheet (no electronic submissions). Please include
your address and indicate where and when the story originally appeared on the
first page of the manuscript.
Include a brief covering letter and/or bibliographic information with (preferably)
an e-mail contact address. If this is not possible, then
please include a stamped, self-addressed envelope if submitting from the UK
and a self-addressed envelope plus at least two (2) International Reply Coupons
if submitting from any other country if you require a reply when the final contents
have been selected (usually when the book has been delivered to the publisher,
around May). All manuscripts will be deemed disposible.
Publishers of magazines, fanzines,
chapbooks, small press anthologies and collections, or any other horror-related
material which appears during the consideration period are also encouraged to
send copies to the address below. All appropriate items received will get a
mention in the introductory essay looking back over the year in horror.

Supernatural fiction writer R. CHETWYND-HAYES, described by one of his publishers
as "Britain's Prince of Chill", died of bronchial pneumonia on March 20th. He
was 81, and since early 2000 had been living in a care home in Teddington, South
London.
For more than thirty years, Chetwynd-Hayes steadily turned out over 200 short
stories and more than a dozen novels, and at one time his collections of ghost
stories and humorous horror filled the shelves of nearly every public library
in the United Kingdom.
